Dr. Martin S？ndergaard is a Senior Researcher at the National Environmental Research Institute (NERI), and head of lake ecology section, Aarhus University. He has specialized in freshwater ecology and applied research since 1985. His key areas of research are nutrient dynamics in shallow lakes and the interactions between nutrient cycling and biological structure, including also methods for lake restoration. Specific research areas include: phosphorus exchange between sediment and water, internal phosphorus loading, and the response of lakes to reduced nutrient loading. His research involves studies at ecosystem level as well as detailed studies and analyses of comprehensive data sets obtained from the Danish national lake monitoring programme. His publications comprise more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters or other scientific publications, 60 technical and consultancy reports, one book, 20 popular articles. His total number of citations is over 4,500, with an average yearly citation of over 500 for the past 3 years. In 2010, the lake group received the prestigious limnological award, the “Einar Naumann-August Thienemann Medal” for “substantial contribution to shallow lake ecology”.
