Explanatory and predictive modelling of cyanobacterial bloom by evolutionary algorithms

Friedrich Recknagel got his PhD and Habilitation from the Dresden University of Technology in Germany. In 1992 he received a Humboldt Stipend for postdoctoral research at the National Institute of Environmental Studies in Tsukuba, Japan. Since 1993 he is Professor in Ecosystem Modelling and Freshwater Ecology at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has also affiliations with the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the North‐West University, South Africa. He is Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Ecological Informatics, and Editorial Board member of the journals Environmental Modelling and Software and Ecological Modelling. His research is focusing on management and modelling of eutrophication processes in lakes and catchments. In the 1980s he developed the process-based lake ecosystem model SALMO that has been applied to lakes worldwide and been awarded with the Research Price of the Dresden University of Technology. He pioneered ecological applications of neural networks and evolutionary algorithms, and established the discipline Ecological Informatics. His current research focuses on short- and real-time forecasting by models with both interpretability and predictivity. He has been invited as Keynote Speaker to 19 International Conferences, chaired 10 International Conferences on Ecological Informatics, published 5 books and more than 150 peer-reviewed papers.
