报告题目:Saving freshwater biodiversity: Sustainable water management and land use design in the Anthropocene

Tibor Erős is one of Europe’s foremost aquatic ecologists and a leading authority on freshwater ecology and conservation. With over 25 years of scientific experience, he currently heads the Fish and Conservation Ecology Research Group at the HUN-REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute, Hungary’s premier freshwater research institution, where he also served as director from 2021 to 2024.

His research is characterized by an integrative approach that links community ecology, conservation biology, and applied freshwater monitoring, with the ultimate aim of supporting sustainable water management and biodiversity protection. His primary scientific interests include:

·         Freshwater community ecology, with a focus on the drivers and patterns of fish assemblages in streams and lakes.

·         The ecological assessment of surface waters using biological indicators, particularly fish-based metrics under the EU Water Framework Directive.

·         The impact of invasive species on native biodiversity and ecosystem function.

·         The development of monitoring systems and decision-support tools for river and lake restoration.

·         The use of graph theory and network ecology to model river connectivity and optimize conservation planning across dendritic freshwater systems.

·         Quantifying trade-offs between biodiversity and ecosystem services to guide evidence-based conservation strategies.

During his work, he has played a central role in developing Hungary’s national biodiversity monitoring program, identifying key threats to fish assemblages, and developing and implementing ecological status evaluation methods to support water quality and conservation policies of the European Union, with special regard to the EU Water Framework Directive. As a scientific leader, Tibor Erős has supervised several national and EU-funded research projects, including as principal investigator in two Horizon Europe consortia focused on freshwater restoration.

He is a prolific and widely cited scholar, having authored more than 200 articles in top-tier journals including Ecology Letters, Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, WIRES Water. His publication metrics on Google Scholar and ResearchGate reflect his significant influence on both theoretical ecology and applied environmental science.

He regularly serves as a scientific expert to governmental bodies such as the Hungarian General Directorate of Water Management, where he advises on the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive. He has also held key positions on scientific boards including the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Ecological and Environmental Science Committees, the Hungarian National Biodiversity Monitoring Program, Hungarian National Science Foundation, Joint Danube Survey international research expeditions, River intercalibration Group of the EU WFD, and the European Federation of Freshwater Sciences.
